Rio Ferdinand is considering rejecting the chance to return to Manchester United because of reservations about moving his family to the north-west.
The 40-year-old has held talks with Ed Woodward over a senior position on United’s board.
United are keen to appoint a technical director and Metro.co.uk understands Mike Phelan is in pole position to get the job.
However, Phelan wants to retain a link to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first team set-up and United want a sporting director to oversee club recruitment.
But, though Ferdinand is interested in a return to Old Trafford, he has reservations over ‘uprooting his young family’ according to the Manchester Evening News.
Ferdinand has three young children all below the age of 12 and he lost his wife Rebecca to breast cancer in 2013 when she was aged just 35.
Ferdinand has since got engaged to The Only Way is Essex star Katie Wright and is undecided whether he can fully commit to such a demanding role at the Theatre of Dreams.
United want to appoint a technical director and his aide by the end of the season but time is running out before the transfer window opens.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will need all the help he can get to convince players to join the club after their Champions League hopes ended on Sunday.
